Dr. Sarah volunteering for Vets Beyond Borders
From August 31st to September 5th this year, Dr. Sarah volunteered through a group called Vets Beyond Borders and travelled to Thursday Island in the Torres Strait. She helped to do a combination of vaccines, parasite prevention, treating heart worm, desexing surgeries, lump removals etc over 5 days! The team comprised of two vets, two nurses and a receptionist where they did 30 consults and 12 surgeries a day. The surgeries were performed in a converted shipping container and the consults were done in a converted shed with the equipment they needed.
Vets Beyond Borders is a registered charity, established in 2005, which deploys volunteer veterinarians, veterinary nurses, and other animal welfare workers to help improve the lives of animals and developing communities around the world. They receive no government funding and rely entirely on the generosity of compassionate people to help communities and animals in need.
Sarah says that she highly recommends taking the time to do a voluntary trip, it’s an incredible chance to give your knowledge and skill set to a remote community, and it’s makes you realize how lucky we are with our options for veterinary care on the mainland. It's also a fantastic chance to meet people from all around Australia, and an excuse to see more of our beautiful country; a very humbling experience.
We are very proud of her achievement here at Fur Life Vet Torquay, well done Sarah!
Nurse Bec volunteering with Animals Fiji
On October 12th til October 26th, one of our Torquay North vet nurses Bec went to Fiji on a volunteer trip to volunteer with an organization called Animals Fiji. She helped to perform 63 surgeries in two weeks that included desexing surgeries, lump removals, amputations and more! Bec said her experience was a great opportunity to meet and work with other members of our industry. She thoroughly enjoyed the chance to give back to the community of Fiji by participating in the treatment of dogs and cats belonging to the Fijian community.
Animals Fiji was established in 2011 and have been in operation for over ten years. There are four permanent clinics based in the Western and Northern Divisions of Fiji; Nadi, Lautoka, Savusavu, and Labasa. Animals Fiji performs outreach to communities in Fiji that lack access to veterinary and animal welfare services. The Nadi clinic also has a shelter which takes in stray, injured or abused animals, who are then treated and re-homed.
Although she was there to mainly train final year vet students in anaesthesia and surgery, she also left feeling like she had learned a great deal. One of the biggest things she loved learning about was just how much you can do with so little. She cannot wait for her next volunteer adventure! Well done Bec for contributing to such a great cause in Fiji!
Vet Nurse Day
We celebrate Vet Nurse Day every year at our clinic. It’s a day to commemorate our unsung heroes of the vet world here at Fur Life Vet Torquay! They are the glue that keeps everything together in the clinic, always keeping our vets on track during surgeries and consultations.
Our nurses; Bec, Tia and Georgia thrive to give the best care to every patient that walks through our doors. Always there for cuddles and treats, we are lucky to have such a great team of nurses.
